5 MLB Players Who Can Teach You Spanish

With only thirty games left in the baseball season, we know which teams are good and which teams are cooked.

As for me, I am still confident my Chicago Cubbies can catch the Brewers.

As you’re probably aware, Major League Baseball has deep roots across Latin America.

The Dominican Republic.
Venezuela.
Cuba.
Puerto Rico.
Mexico.

Some of the best players in baseball come from Spanish-speaking countries.

Which means MLB rosters are full of Spanish surnames.

And if you’ve spent enough time watching baseball, you may have been learning Spanish vocabulary without knowing it.

Take Houston Astros infielder Isaac Paredes.

Paredes means walls.

So, now we can root on our favorite team and learn from relevant Construction Spanish at the same time.

Here are five current MLB players whose last names can help you add a few words to your Spanish vocabulary:

Isaac Paredes
Paredes :: walls

Necesitamos pintar las paredes hoy.
We need to paint the walls today.

Triston Casas
Casas :: houses / homes

¿Cuántas casas terminamos esta semana?
How many houses did we finish this week?

Raisel Iglesias
Iglesias :: churches

Nuestros próximos dos proyectos son iglesias.
Our next two projects are churches.

Mark Vientos
Vientos :: winds

Hay vientos fuertes hoy.
There are strong winds today.

Victor Mesa Jr.
Mesa :: table

Pon las herramientas en la mesa.
Put the tools on the table.

Five players.

Five Spanish words.

And five phrases you could use on the jobsite.

Don’t think you must be able to speak fluent Spanish before you start speaking Spanish on the job site.

Have some fun with it.
Think of it as a game.
